The Mercer County Symphonic Band is a performing ensemble of Mercer County Community College. The Band is celebrating its 47th season with a membership totaling more than sixty musicians. The Band has been under the direction of Dr. Lou Woodruff for the past twenty-seven years. Founded by the College in 1979, the Band provides a unique opportunity for students and community musicians to share in making music in a safe and challenging environment. Auditions are not required. More than three hundred musicians have played in the Band over the years.
The Mercer County Symphonic Band remains dedicated to promoting the musical growth of its members and the music appreciation of its audiences. Through focused weekly rehearsals at the College, the members build instrumental techniques, develop individual musicianship and apply group performance skills in the recreation of a wide variety of musical compositions.
Members performing tonight span over sixty years in age. Coming together to share in making music can form bonds across generations and develop a strong sense of personal accomplishment, group belonging and community. The Band rehearses on campus Monday evenings, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., September through June. All are welcome to sit in and stay as long as they wish.
In addition to presenting annual Winter and Spring Concerts at the Kelsey Theatre, the Band also performs for area retirement communities and other organizations and community events.
